MEDICARE BASICS

Medicare Supplement vs. Medicare Advantage

by Ken Williams

8 Nov 2023

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans and Medicare Advantage (Part C) offer different benefits, and the choice between them may depend on individual needs, preferences, and financial considerations.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

  • Offers more predictable out-of-pocket costs.
  • Allows access to any doctor in the U.S. that accepts Medicare.
  • Tends to be more expensive with monthly premiums ranging from $150 to $200.
  • Does not usually cover prescription drugs; separate Part D enrollment is necessary.
  • A small percentage of plans may offer benefits like vision, dental, and hearing.
  • International travel coverage may be included.

Medicare Advantage (Part C):

  • Often has $0 deductible, no copay for a primary doctor, and low copays for specialists.
  • Has restricted provider networks.
  • Typically includes Part D prescription drug coverage and may cover vision, hearing, and dental.
  • Some plans allow for out-of-network coverage.
  • You may need a referral to see a specialist.

Switching between plans is subject to enrollment periods and other restrictions. You can switch from Medigap to Medicare Advantage during the Open Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7). Conversely, switching from Medicare Advantage to Medigap is possible during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 to March 31), but it’s important to confirm eligibility and coverage with your provider.

Claire's Perspective

CLAIRE’S PERSPECTIVE

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your health history, budget, benefits preference, and medication needs. Medigap may cover copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles but not services like long-term care, vision, or dental care. Medicare Advantage offers all Original Medicare benefits, plus additional coverage for services not included in Original Medicare, like vision, hearing, and dental care, with some plans also covering prescription drugs.
