MEDICARE BASICS

Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage

by Ken Williams

6 Nov 2023

Navigating the maze of healthcare options can be a daunting task, particularly when it comes to understanding the nuances of Medicare. In this article, we explore the distinctions in coverage between Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) and Medicare Advantage (Part C), aiding beneficiaries in making informed choices that suit their individual health needs.

Original Medicare: Parts A & B

Part A – Hospital Insurance

  • Coverage: Part A primarily covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
  • Cost: For most beneficiaries, Part A is premium-free if they or their spouse have paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. However, there are deductibles and co-payments.

Part B – Medical Insurance

  • Coverage: Part B covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
  • Cost: There is a monthly premium for Part B, which may vary based on income. Additionally, it usually covers 80% of the Medicare-approved amount for covered services, leaving the beneficiary responsible for the remaining 20%.

Medicare Advantage: Part C

Comprehensive Coverage

  • Coverage: Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies and combine Part A and Part B coverage. Often, they include additional benefits such as vision, dental, and hearing care.
  • Prescription Drugs: Most Medicare Advantage plans also include prescription drug coverage (Part D), which would otherwise need to be purchased separately under Original Medicare.

Costs and Limitations

  • Cost: While the premiums for Medicare Advantage plans can be lower, they may have co-pays and deductibles. However, these plans have an out-of-pocket maximum limit, offering a safeguard against excessive costs.
  • Network Restrictions: Medicare Advantage plans may limit beneficiaries to a network of providers, potentially impacting choice of doctors and hospitals.

Extra Benefits and Wellness Programs

  • Extra Benefits: Many Medicare Advantage plans offer comprehensive additional benefits, including dental, hearing, vision, transportation, and more. Some may even offer benefit cards that can be used to buy groceries or pay for utilities.
  • Wellness Programs: Many Medicare Advantage plans offer wellness programs, fitness memberships, and additional services focused on maintaining and improving health.
  • Coordinated Care: Medicare Advantage plans often focus on coordinated healthcare, emphasizing preventive services and management of chronic conditions.

Making the Choice: Key Considerations

  • Flexibility vs. Network: Original Medicare generally provides more flexibility in choosing healthcare providers, whereas Medicare Advantage may restrict beneficiaries to a network but offer additional benefits.
  • Cost: Original Medicare can potentially result in higher out-of-pocket costs without a supplemental plan, while Medicare Advantage caps out-of-pocket expenses but may have network limitations.
  • Additional Coverage: If dental, vision, or prescription drug coverage is crucial, one might lean towards Medicare Advantage, as Original Medicare does not cover these comprehensively without additional plans.
  • Travel: For those who travel frequently, Original Medicare might offer broader coverage across different regions compared to the potentially geographically limited Medicare Advantage plans.
