MEDICARE ADVANTAGE

Stand-Alone Medicare Advantage vs. MA-PD

by Ken Williams

20 Nov 2023

Medicare Advantage (MA) plans and Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MA-PD) plans are two types of health insurance options available under Medicare, each with distinct features and benefits. Understanding the differences between them is crucial for beneficiaries to make informed decisions about their healthcare coverage.

Medicare Advantage (MA) Plans

  • Definition: Medicare Advantage plans are an alternative to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.
  • Coverage: MA plans provide all the benefits of Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). They often include additional benefits not covered by Original Medicare, such as vision, hearing, and dental services.
  • Costs: The costs associated with MA plans can vary. Beneficiaries still pay the Part B premium, along with any additional premium charged by the MA plan. These plans may also have different deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
  • Provider Networks: MA plans typically have a network of doctors and hospitals. Beneficiaries must use the network providers to get the lowest out-of-pocket costs. This can limit flexibility in choosing healthcare providers.
  • Additional Benefits: Many MA plans offer wellness programs, gym memberships, and other health-related benefits not available under Original Medicare.

Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MA-PD) Plans

  • Definition: MA-PD plans are a type of Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage. These plans combine the benefits of Medicare Part A, Part B, and Part D (prescription drug coverage) in one plan.
  • Coverage: Along with providing all the benefits of a standard MA plan, MA-PD plans cover prescription medications. The inclusion of Part D eliminates the need for a separate prescription drug plan.
  • Costs: The costs for MA-PD plans can include the Part B premium, an additional plan premium, and other out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance for prescriptions. The structure of these costs can vary significantly among plans.
  • Formulary: MA-PD plans have a formulary, or a list of covered drugs. Beneficiaries need to check the formulary to ensure their prescriptions are covered and understand the costs associated with them.
  • Provider and Pharmacy Networks: Like MA plans, MA-PD plans have networks of healthcare providers and typically also have preferred pharmacies. Beneficiaries may pay more if they use providers or pharmacies outside the network.

Key Differences and Considerations

  • Prescription Drug Coverage: The most significant difference is that MA-PD plans include prescription drug coverage, while standalone MA plans do not. Beneficiaries who need prescription drug coverage and choose a standalone MA plan will need to enroll in a separate Part D plan.
  • Costs and Coverage: While both plans can offer additional benefits beyond Original Medicare, the costs and the extent of coverage can vary. It’s important for beneficiaries to compare plans based on their healthcare needs and financial situation.
  • Network Restrictions: Both plans may have network restrictions, but it’s particularly important for beneficiaries to consider these when choosing an MA-PD plan, as it will affect both their medical services and prescription drug purchases.

Changing Plans: Beneficiaries should be aware of the enrollment periods and rules for changing plans. Understanding these can help avoid gaps in coverage or unexpected costs.

Claire's Perspective
CLAIRE’S PERSPECTIVE

Choosing between a standalone Medicare Advantage plan and an MA-PD plan depends on individual healthcare needs, especially regarding prescription drugs, and financial considerations. It’s important for beneficiaries to carefully review and compare the features, costs, and coverage of each plan option before making a decision. Consulting with a Medicare expert or using the Medicare Plan Finder tool can also assist in this process.
